Joseph Chan Ph.D.
Call me Joe. I am an Australian living in Naarm / Melbourne. I speak English, Dutch, Cantonese, and Malay.
I am a machine learning researcher and engineer with a PhD in mathematics and over 9 years of experience across ML, scientific modelling, software engineering and technical consulting. My current research focuses on language modelling, data-efficient learning and novel neural architectures, with a BabyLM 2026 submission under review. My expertise is in experimental design, PyTorch/Python, statistical modelling, reinforcement learning, and production ML/software engineering.
I wrote my PhD in Mathematics at The University of Melbourne titled On Hyperbolic Monopoles, in the intersection of geometry and particle physics.
Outside of work, I do (men's artistic) gymnastics, self-teach classical singing, and play the piano.
